“The Settler Problem” is an inversion of a famously damaging phrase from Canadian history, and it acts for the title of Dylan Humphreys’ series of paintings for The Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery. Using oil paint, Humphreys recontextualizes archival photographs from the founding of his childhood town with the intention to update certain perspectives on its collective memory. This exhibition consists of dreamlike vignettes that capture sardonic wit and anachronistic contradictions while also conveying a loving veneration for the humanistic practice of image-making. Humphreys’ paintings symbolize an iconoclastic attempt to make art with a social responsibility, to destroy broken ideas and ask, “What can we build in its wake?”
