Museum History

The purpose of the Nelson and District Museum, Archives, Art Gallery and Historical Society is to run a sustainable, integrated organization that actively promotes, through exhibitions and programming, the knowledge, appreciation and understanding of history and art.

Mission and Vision

The Nelson and District Museum, Archives, Art Gallery and Historical Society (the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery) is a registered Canadian charity and is governed by a Board of Directors. The board is guided by the Mission, Vision, Mandate, and Core Values of the organization.

Mission: An inclusive society inspired by the convergence of art and history.

Vision: To be a cultural hub that provides integrative art and regional history programs to encourage new perspectives and foster a collaborative community.

Mandate: The purpose of the Nelson and District Museum, Archives, Art Gallery and Historical Society is to run a sustainable, integrated organization that actively promotes, through exhibitions and programming, the knowledge, appreciation and understanding of history and art.

Core Values

Quality: We provide the highest quality visitor experiences, public services, and stakeholder relationships.

Accessibility: We provide an accessible and inclusive public museum, archives and art gallery.

Stewardship: We maintain strong relationships with our members and stakeholders and emphasize the care of our collection and archives.
